Welcome to Encyclopedia!

Will your contributions to scientific research go down in history?

The year is 1739, and as aspiring naturalists and adventurers, you’ve been hired by the Comte de Buffon – Darwin’s predecessor – to help him create the first encyclopedia of natural history.

To do so, you’ll be conducting research, organizing ambitious expeditions and publishing studies of the world’s most fascinating creatures!

Encyclopedia is a dice-based worker placement game for 1-4 players, designed by Olivier Melison avec Eric Dubus, the authors of Museum and Dominations: Road to Civilization.

The aim of the game is to become the biggest contributor to Buffon’s encyclopedia.

Through a dice placement mechanic, you will be able to choose different animals to study, prepare for your research and lead expeditions to other continents.

All this will allow you to reach your main goal: publishing your findings to impress the public and increase your fame!

How it Works

Over the course of a game of Encyclopedia, you’ll be drawing dice from a bag each round, rolling them, then placing them on your player board.

These dice can then be used to perform one of 6 different actions per turn. Some actions require the die used to be of a matching colour, whereas others will require a certain value.

The first three locations on the board – the Bank, the Embassy and the University – are all about preparing for your research expeditions.

Placing a die at the Bank will allow you raise funds for your work, gaining you 5 Coins. Any color or value of die can be used here. The Coins you gain can be used to increase the value of a die!

The Embassy awards you with Expedition tokens! The color of the die isn’t important here, but the higher its value, the more tokens you obtain. These tokens allow you to change the color of a die, or increase its value by 2 during an Expedition action.

At the University, you can hire an Expert for your research team. These cards grant special bonuses, which take effect during play or at the end of the game. At the University, the value of your die doesn’t matter, but if its color matches that of the Expert card, then you gain an additional Expedition token!

Once you’ve prepared for your expeditions, it’s time for your research to begin!

Placing a die on the board’s fourth location, the Academy, will allow you to pick an Animal to study. Your die must be the same color as the Animal card you wish to take, and depending on the value of your die, you’ll also get a number of Reputation points.

Each player has a Reputation track on their board, and your Reputation points will earn you lots of bonuses throughout the game!

Each Animal card has a number of characteristics, defined by four Types: its category (bird, reptile or mammal), its diet, its habitat, and its preferred climate.

Now that you’ve chosen your animals, it’s time to study them in their natural habitats!

Placing a die on an Expedition allows you to visit a continent of your choice in order to research the Animal cards that you have of the same color. The die placed must be the same color as the continent you wish to explore. The die’s value will determine just how much research you can do!

The different Types on each Animal card all have a research cost, which you must pay for with the value of your die, plus any Coins and other tokens you wish to spend. You then place Research cubes on the cards to show which of their Types you have studied.

Once you have done your research, you can share your findings with the world! The final action on the board is Publication. To publish your research, you must place a die on one of your Animal cards, which will be your Reference Animal. This animal will be the centerpiece of your publication. The die you choose must be the same color as your Reference Animal, and its value determines the Type you can publish. You may also publish any animals you have that have at least one thing in common (their Type or their color) with your Reference Animal!

Your Research cubes are then transferred onto the Publication section of the board, immediately earning you points. Your collections of Research cubes will also earn you points during final scoring! The Animal cards that you published are set to one side, and any collections of the same color will earn you points at the end of the game.

The game ends after six rounds, and the player with the most Victory points wins!

Encyclopedia is an expert worker placement game that is both accessible and beautiful!

Easy to learn, hard to master

The game’s beautiful theme ties in strongly with its mechanics, making the rules easy to grasp.

Beating the random

The game offers a multitude of ways to counter the random element of your dice rolls. As well as spending tokens to change the value or color of a die, players can also choose to use another player’s die! Taking a die from another player’s board does not cost anything, but the targeted player gains a bonus. No matter what the game deals you, you’ll always be able to find a way to make your strategy work.

A beautiful game with a strong theme

Encyclopedia has been sumptuously illustrated by Ronan Toulhoat, Jérémie Prugneaux and Joëlle Drans. The game includes gorgeously detailed illustrations of 75 birds, mammals and reptiles from all over the world.

Encyclopedia will be crowdfunding in March 2022!
